Saturn - "a different kind of car company" or so claimed General Motors wheen
Saturn was established in 1985. It was a wholly owned subsidiary of
General Motors. Saturn was intended from the very beginning to stay away
from rebadging Chevy cars and selling them under the Saturn moniker.
General Motors had repeated utilized the rebadging strategy for all of its ten
car brand. Publically claiming Saturn was a "different kind of company"
meant the rebadging strategy would have to change, at least for Saturn.
Part of this motto held true and Saturn had some independence from General
Motors' other brands.
It had a unique assembly plant in Tennessee. Most importantly, Saturn had
its own unique models not available elsewhere on the General Motors bench (for
the most part). Saturn even had its own retailer network. In
hindsight, all the Saturn features were just what General Motors needed to
sustain itself. Instead of different brands with the same rebadged models,
a few brands with different models would make more sense to the consumer.
Saturn aimed to provide exactly that. However, the change was small and
results were average. General Motors filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and
Saturn as a marquee was dissolved.
