Pontiac was intended to be General Motors' sports car division.  Pontiac cars were built with sports performance in the DNA with an exception of occasional mutations such as the Pontiac Aztec.  Pontiac occasionally veered off the sports car path but found its way back.  In 2008, Pontiac had arguably the most exciting line up of all General Motors' entry level brands.  The Pontiac Solstice got great driver reviews and the Pontiac G8 was the cheapest 415 horses money could buy.  General Motors targeted the marquee towards consumers wanting a more athletic car brand and finally succeeded.  Sadly, 2008 was also the last production year for Pontiac.  The brand was phased out following GM's bankruptcy in 2009.

In Pontiac's infancy, the Pontiac Chief was, by far, the best selling Pontiac model.  The moniker refers to Chief Pontiac who led an unsuccessful uprising against the British after the French and Indian War.  The brand was named after Chief Pontiac and its makes sense to introduce a car under his name.  In only its second year of production, the Pontiac Chief became the top selling six cylinder car in the United States and seventh overall.  Pontiac did this by aiming a six cylinder at a market full of inexpensive four cyclinders.  In essence, the Pontiac Chief sold exceptionally well because it was a six cylinder car priced and aimed at four cyclinders.  In 2009, General Motors decided to dissolved the Pontiac marquee largely due to financial troubles.
