In the automobile industry all car marquees fit in two neat categories, entry
level car brands and luxury car brands. Mercury is Ford's attempt at
finding a middle ground. Mercury can be dated back to 1939 as a project
headed by Edsel Ford, the son of Henry Ford himself. Officially, Mercury
is an entry level luxury car maker and a wholly owned marquee of Ford Motors.
Mercury was formed to compete with Chrysler, which is the entry level luxury
upgrade to Dodge, and Buick of General Motors. Currenty, Mercury is part
of the three major Ford brands - Ford (namesake), Lincoln, and Mercury.
For most of the 2000s, Mercury has been a relatively unsuccessful franchise.
All the models look same as Ford models just as they did in the 1990s.
Rebadging did not convince consumers to pay a premium over Ford models.
Experts, including Edmunds, JD Power, and others, have been predicting Mercury
sales to fall below sustainable levels since the early 2000s. Ford, on the
other hand, might be changing strategy. Instead of focusing on entry level
luxury, Ford is rumored to market Mercury as a premuim small car company - think
Mini. As of 2010, nothing in Mercury's lineup even remotely suggests
congruence to Ford's future plans but only time will tell.
