Jaguar is one of the oldest auto manufacturers, dating back to the early 20th
century. It is one of the original British car makers. Jaguar was
previously owned by BMC (British Motor Company). Recently, it was owned by
Ford Motors. In 2009, the sale of Jaguar was finalized Tata Motors of
India. The irony here and the reason behind some upset Brits is India did
not gain independence from the British till 1947. Today, an Indian company
owns the two most iconic British car companies next to the Mini, Jaguar and Land
Rover. During its ownership under Ford, Ford was largely criticized for
"diluting" the Jaguar luxury brand. One telling example is the rebadging
of the Ford Contour as the Jaguar X type. If that was not bad enough, Ford
made the executive decision to market the Jaguar X type as an affordable Jaguar
offered under $30k. Luxury cars aren't supposed to be affordable by
definition. The Jaguar purists did not respond well. Other non
Jaugar fans/consumers soon realized they can get the same car from the Ford
dealership for $10k less, sans the leaping Jaguar badges. In 2009, when
Jaguar was sold by Ford to the Indian automotive manufacturing giant, Tata
Motors, there were mixed feelings but no one misses the X Type.
Consequently, that was the same year Jaguar rejuvenated their entire lineup with
a fresh design philosophy. Gone were any indications or cues to the Jaguar
of old - a design template which had stayed with the company for 50 years.
