Hummer is an American car company manufacturing off road vehicles only. All Hummer models are safe for city driving but are aimed at the weekend off roader. The original Hummer was literally a soldier. Today it is more widely known as the Hummer H1. The original Hummer is a legend and belongs in a automotive history museum. It was made for the American armed forces by AM General. A civilian model of the Hummer H1 was sold in very limited quantities. The Hummer H1 kept military features from the original such as two fuel tanks, huge diesel engine which protruded into the cabin, water proof plating, and much more. When AM General dissolved, the Hummer brand ended up in the hands of General Motors. Previously, it was only a glorified concept vehicle but under General Motors' leadership, Hummer became a car brand of its own. The H1 was replaced by a more practical H2. The smaller H3 was introduced. Both models also came with an open back variation, a la pickup truck bed. General Motors had successfully turned a specialty niche vehicle into a complete brand. In 2009, Hummer was sold to a Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer Tengzhong.
